CELEBRATING 10 YEARS OF CHAPTER ACCOMPLISHMENTS

1997 - 2007

2006

  • Awarded two $250 book scholarship stipends to two of GCBDPA’s graduating high school seniors.

  • Sent three students to the BDPA National Conference in Los Angeles to attend the BDPA National Youth Technology Camp August 2-5, 2006.  The Youth Technology Camp was held in conjunction with the BDPA Annual National Technology Conference.

  • Held several TechTini events and Tech Lunch events during the year to promote technical and professional development among IT professionals in the Midlands.

  • Graduated 17 students from our High School Computer Training Program on May 20, 2006.

  • Trained 20+ students in our High School Computer Training Program, which was held from February – May, 2006.  Classes were held on Saturdays at Midlands Technical College, NE Campus.

  • Held a one-day technology conference in support of the Black Family Technology Awareness Week events.  Conference was held at Midlands Technical College, NE Campus.  Workshops and hands-on seminars were presented on a variety of IT topics.  The public was invited and families were encouraged to attend.

2005

  • Held our annual Scholarship and Award event on December 13, 2005.  Event was held at BlueCross BlueShield of South Carolina.  BlueCross BlueShield and Midlands Technical College were recognized as sponsors-of-the-year.

  • Participated in The State’s Women’s Expo in October; distributed information on BDPA to expo attendees.

  • Held our First Annual Golf Tournament on October 8, 2006. 

  • Chapter sponsored a team of 5 Midlands Area high school students to attend the BDPA Annual National Conference in Detroit, MI and compete in the High School Computer Competition. The team placed fourth overall out of 22 teams from across the nation. 

  • Held car washes and other fundraisers to raise funds for the training programs.

  • Trained 18 high school students in the annual High School Computer Training Program.  Classes were held at Midlands Technical College, NE Campus.  Graduation was held on June 7th.

  • Held a one-day IT summit in observance of Black Family Technology Awareness Week in February. The summit was held at Midlands Technical College, and workshops and hands-on seminars were presented on a variety of IT topics.  The public was invited and families were encouraged to attend.

 

2004

  • Held our annual Scholarship and Award event on December 15, 2004.  Event was held at the Capital City Club in downtown Columbia.  BlueCross BlueShield and Midlands Technical College were recognized as co-sponsors-of-the-year, and Jessica Eggleston was honored as the BDPA 2004 College Scholarship recipient.

  • Sponsored three HSCC students to attend the National BDPA Youth Conference in Dallas in August.  The Youth Conference was held as part of the BDPA Annual National Technology Conference events.

  • Trained and graduated 32 middle school and high school students in our 2004 High School Computer Training Program.  Classes were held at Midlands Technical College, NE Campus.

  • Won the Palmetto Pillar Award for Community Service, an award sponsored by the Greater Columbia Chamber of Commerce’s Information Technology Council. Award was presented at the Palmetto Pillar Awards Banquet held at the Adams Mark Downtown on May 6, 2004.

  • Held a one-day IT summit in observance of Black Family Technology Awareness Week in February. The summit was held at Midlands Technical College, and workshops and hands-on seminars were presented on a variety of IT topics.  The public was invited and families were encouraged to attend. 

2003

  • Held Chapter’s Sixth Annual Scholarship and Awards event on December 6th.  Speaker was Dr. Willis Ham, Director, Webster University.  Awards presented included Chapter Member of the Year, Corporate Sponsor of the Year, President’s Award recipient, and the 2003 College Scholarship recipient.

  • Awarded a $1000 college scholarship to Letitia Hope, Keenan High School graduate.

  • Chapter sponsored 5 Midlands Area high school students to attend the BDPA Annual National Conference in Philadelphia, PA and compete in the High School Computer Competition. The team placed fourth overall out of 23 teams from across the nation. 

  • Chapter was honored as 2nd runner-up in the Chapter of the Year contest, and Chapter President was named BDPA President of the Year.

  • Held car washes and other fundraisers to raise funds for the training programs.

  • Hosted the BDPA HSCC Regional Competition, where teams from Columbia, Central Savannah, and Charlotte competed in the areas of program design, quiz bowl, and written competition.  Columbia teams won first and second place.

  • Trained 50 high school students in the annual High School Computer Training Program.  Classes were held at Midlands Technical College.  Graduation was held on June 7th.

  • Held a one-day IT summit in observance of Black Family Technology Awareness Week in February. The summit was held at Midlands Technical College, and workshops and hands-on seminars were presented on a variety of IT topics.  The public was invited and families were encouraged to attend. 

2002

  • Chapter held the Fifth Annual Scholarship and Awards event on December .  The speaker was Robert McKie, Manager, SCANA Corporation.  Awards presented included Chapter Member of the Year, Corporate Sponsor of the Year, President’s Award recipient, and the 2002 College Scholarship recipient.

  • Hosted the Fourth Quarter National BDPA Board of Directors meeting and Chapter Presidents meeting in November, during which BDPA’s national officers and all chapter presidents convened to conduct BDPA business and planning meetings. Allen University hosted the Chapter Presidents meeting.

  • The Chapter was well represented at the BDPA National Conference in Orlando FL. In August.  10 adult members and 6 student members attended.  The Chapter’s High School Computer Competition (HSCC) Team competed, and two students attended the Youth Conference.  The HSCC team finished fifth in the programming component of the competition, and ninth overall out of 22 HSCC teams.  Chapter received the following awards:

  • “Professional Services Award”

  • 2nd runner up to the Chapter of the Year

  • "Outstanding President of the Year Award"

  • "Outstanding Member of the Year" award

  • Hosted first regional high school computer competition at Midland’s Technical College on May 26th, 2002.  Four teams from BDPA Charlotte and GCBDPA participated. 

  • Held a one-day IT summit in observance of Black Family Technology Awareness Week in February. The summit was held at Midlands Technical College, and workshops and hands-on seminars were presented on a variety of IT topics.  The public was invited and families were encouraged to attend.

  • Conducted our High School Computer Training Program with over 30 High School Students participating.  In addition to the regular training curriculum, ASP (active server pages) development tool was added.

  • Continued partnership with Midlands Technical College, which provided facilities and equipment for the High School Computer Training Program sessions, as well as other chapter events.

2001 

Speaker was Dr. Glenda Suber, Associate Professor and Associate Dean, Benedict College.  Awards presented included Chapter Member of the Year, Corporate Sponsor of the Year, President’s Award, and the 2001 College Scholarship Recipient

  • Chapter was well represented at the BDPA National Conference in Chicago, IL in August

Chapter’s High School Computer Competition  (HSCC) Team competed at the HSCC competition

 Chapter won the “Developing Chapter of the Year” award

 HSCC team came in 1st place in the T-shirt Graphic Design competition

Two students attended the Youth Conference

  • Chapter’s High School Computer Training Program trained and graduated over 50 high school students.  All graduating students were given complimentary student BDPA memberships 

  • Partnered with Benedict College to sponsor the Art Show Program held on February 6th at Benedict in Celebration of Black History Month.

  • Sponsored a technology summit in recognition of the Black Family Technology Awareness Week.  The all day technology training event was held at Midlands Technical College and featured hands-on and interactive sessions on various IT topics.

2000

  • Held the Third Annual Scholarship and Awards Banquet on November 17, 2000. 

  • Speaker was Dr. Stacey Franklin Jones, Chair, Mathematics and Computer Science Department at Benedict College

  • Awards presented included Chapter Member of the Year, Corporate Sponsor of the Year, President’s Award Recipient, and the 2000 Scholarship Recipient

  • The Chapter was well represented at the BDPA National Conference in Washington, DC in August, 2000.  In addition to many Chapter members attending, the Chapter’s High School Computer Competition Team competed at the HSCC competition and four students attended the Youth Conference.

  • Chapter President was Interviewed for a Feature Program on SC-ETV on the Digital Divide, and was the featured guest on the Radio Talk Show Program “Sister Talk “, focusing on BDPA and the Digital Divide.

  • Continued the Partnership with the Columbia Urban League, which offered Summer Jobs to all graduates of the 2000 High School Computer Training Program.

  • Presented a Seminar, “Interviewing with Confidence” to Benedict College Students in April, 2000.

  • College and University Partnerships:

  • Established a Partnership with Midlands Technical College through which Midlands Technical College provided the facilities and equipment for the High School Training Program Sessions and Events.

  • Partnered with Benedict College to Sponsor the Art Show Program held on February 6th, 2000 at Benedict in Celebration of Black History Month.

  • Launched and conducted the 2000 High School Computer Training Program from January to June. 

  • Over 40 high school students participated. 

  • Graduation was held in June.

1999

  • Held the Second Annual Scholarship and Awards Banquet in November, 1999.  Presented Corporate Sponsor of the Year, National Presidential Nominee of the Year, and Outstanding Chapter Member of the Year Awards.  Presented a $1,000 College Scholarship to the 1999 College Scholarship recipient.

  • High School Computer Competition Team Competed at the BDPA National Conference in Atlanta, Georgia in August, 1999.  Chapter won the Developing Chapter of the Year Award during the conference.

  • Conducted 1999 High School Computer Training Program for area high school students. Attendance at the sessions ranged from 15-30 High School Students and parents.  Topics included C++, Visual Basic, HTML, Web Page Design, Interviewing Skills, Computer Design, Presentation Skills, and Professionalism.

  • Developed partnership with the Columbia Urban League.

  • Conducted a Workshop on Interviewing Skills and Dress for Success at Benedict College in April, 1999.  All Benedict College Computer Science students were invited to attend.

  • Featured on the WLTX-19 TV station for our High School Computer Training Program in February, 1999.

1998

  • Held Monthly Speaker Forums

  • Donated to the United Negro College Fund

  • Held our First Annual Scholarship and Awards Banquet

  • Presented Corporate Sponsor of the Year, National Presidential Nominee of the Year, and Outstanding Chapter Member of the Year Awards

  • Held a Raffle to Raise Money for the High School Computer Competition Team's Expenses to the 1998 National Conference.  Raffled a computer donated by UPS.

  • Published First Chapter Newsletter: BDPA InfoNet

  • Membership Grew to 110 Members

  • High School Computer Competition Team Competed at the BDPA National Conference in Orlando, Florida in August

  • Members Participated in the 1998 Walk for Life to Aid Breast Cancer Research

1997 

  • Acquired Charter Status

  • Established a 10-Member Corporate Advisory Council

  • Conducted an Introduction to PCs Workshop at USC's College of Applied Professional Science's Computer Lab for Single Mothers

  • Co-Designed the Computer Network at the Columbia Urban League

  • Secured Paid Internships at Major Corporations for Two College Student Members

  • Established Synergies with SDA, NABA, and Toastmasters

  • Recognized by the Columbia Urban League for Outstanding Service to the Community
